Education and creative biography

Rashid Akmalovich Gilazov is a Soviet and Russian painter and muralist. Born on July 22, 1951 in Zelenodolsk, Tatar ASSR. From childhood he was raised in the environment of Tatar decorative and applied arts.

In 1970 he graduated from the Leninogorsk Pedagogical College; in 1981 — from the I. E. Repin Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (studio of E. E. Moiseenko). In 1982–1986 he studied at the creative workshop of the Leningrad branch of the USSR Union of Artists. He taught in the painting department at Herzen Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute. Since 1988 — member of the USSR Union of Artists (painting section); since then he has devoted himself exclusively to art.

People's Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan (2022), Honored Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan (2000), member of the Union of Artists of Russia, Honorary Academician of the International Humanitarian Academy Europe-Asia (UNESCO).

Creative Work

Painting, genres, exhibitions and collections

Author of more than four thousand paintings. He works in portraiture, landscape, still life, and thematic painting; creates monumental frescoes, mosaics, and stained glass. His style blends Russian and Western European painting traditions with Eastern art and Tatar decorative arts; his method is close to impressionism and post-impressionism.

Works are held in the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan), art galleries in Almetyevsk and Naberezhnye Chelny, and private collections in Russia, France, Germany, Italy, and other countries. Solo exhibitions have been held in Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Moscow, Naples, Berlin, Paris, and other cities. He lives and works in Saint Petersburg.

Monumental Art

Murals, mosaic, stained glass

In addition to easel painting, Rashid Gilazov works in monumental art: he creates murals, mosaics, and stained glass.

Stained glass: "Celebration" (1981) — stained glass, co-authors V. I. Tabanin, V. A. Chelnokov, Palace of Culture "Energetik", Zainsk (destroyed in 2016). Stained glass and bronze light fixtures for the interiors of the cathedral mosque in Bolshaya Atnya (1997).

Mosaics: ceramic mosaic on the facade of Palace of Culture "Energetik", Zainsk (1982), co-authored with V. D. Tabulinsky — for the anniversary of Zainsk GRES; in 2016 covered by a ventilated facade, restoration approved.

Monuments and memorials: WWII fallen soldiers memorial, urban-type settlement Urussu, Bavly district (1986), co-authors architects I. A. Shakhov and E. Ya. Tyakht; later reconstructed with deviations from the authors' design.

Murals and monumental painting: "Sabantuy" — mural at Zainsk House of Culture (1977). Murals, repoussé, and easel paintings in the interiors of Zainsk GRES (1978–1987). Mosque "Gali" decoration, Bavly (1996) — project co-author, lead artist. Murals at Houses of Culture in villages Nikiforovo (Mamadysh district) and Murtaza (Bavly district).

Exhibitions

Solo and group shows

Since 1972 he has participated in all-Union, republican, and interregional exhibitions. His first solo exhibition took place in 1983 at the young artists' association of the Leningrad branch of the Union of Artists. Solo shows have been held in Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Moscow, Bavly, Mamadysh, Naples, and Berlin. Since 1995, more than 30 solo exhibitions have been held.

Works by R. A. Gilazov are held in the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan), art galleries in Almetyevsk and Naberezhnye Chelny, the Bavly local history museum, as well as private collections in Russia, France, Germany, Italy, and other countries.

Albums and editions

In 2003, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Saint Petersburg and the 1000th anniversary of Kazan, an album-monograph on Rashid Gilazov's work was published, analyzing 30 years of the artist's career.
